Berkeley High School reported enrollment of 3,583 students in the 2010-2011 school year. Between 500 and 1,246 of those students come from outside of the district, the majority of them via fraudulent registrations.
Adding between 500-1,246 additional students to the roster at Berkeley High exacts a huge toll on our community, financially, socially, and educationally.
Berkeley's fraudulent enrollment figures are so high for two reasons: weak documentation requirements, and an institutional reluctance to engage the community in enforcement efforts.
The good news is that several neighboring communities have shown how our city can fight fraudulent enrollments and preserve the schools for residents and lawful intradistrict transfers.
